D - Reverse Implement Option Switch. Loosen two cap screws A two turns. Slide seat forward or rearward on mounting bracket to desired position.

Tighten cap screws or knobs. Push down on lift lever A slightly and hold locking lever B down with thumb. Move lift lever to desired cutting height. Release locking lever to keep lift lever in position. Rotating blades are dangerous. Before adjusting or servicing mower:. The mower deck can be damaged if mower wheels are adjusted wrong:. Park machine safely. See Parking Safely in the Safety Section. Inflate tires to the correct pressure. Raise lift lever to transport position and adjust cutting height.

Move lift lever to mowing position. Park machine safely on a level surface. Adjust cutting height to middle position. Put lift lever in mowing position. Position mower blades as follows and measure from each outside blade tip B to the level surface. Hold drive belt and turn right blade D as shown. Take measurement for both blades. Loosen top clamping nut E facing inside of mower, on left hand side J-bolt F , approximately one turn.

Loosen upper adjusting nut G. Adjust lift links by turning lower adjusting nut H clockwise to raise left side of mower, counterclockwise to lower left side of mower. Tighten upper adjusting nut. Make sure each front draft rod is equally tensioned. The installed rods should exhibit identical amounts of movement between left and right rods. If one rod moves more freely than the other, the adjustment nut should be tightened until the movement of the assembly matches that of the other side.

Turn blades so front blade tips A point straight forward. Measure from each blade tip to the surface. Turn nuts B on front draft rods C equally until adjustment is correct. Turn nut clockwise to raise front of mower deck or counterclockwise to lower front of mower deck. Measure blade tips again and adjust if necessary. Engine exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide and can cause serious illness or death.

If there is a malfunction during one of these procedures, Do not operate machine. See your John Deere dealer for service. Push mower engagement lever A forward to engage. Result: Engine must not start. If engine starts, there is a problem with your safety interlock circuit.

Pull mower engagement lever A back to disengage. Start engine and move throttle lever B to half-speed position. Move throttle lever to fast speed position. Raise up off of seat, but do not get off tractor. Result: Engine will begin to stop.

If engine does not begin to stop, there is a problem with your safety interlock circuit. Start engine and move throttle lever B to fast speed position.

Result: Engine should continue to run. If engine stops, there is a problem with your safety interlock circuit. Shut the engine off and lock the park brake A. Put transmission in N neutral. Try to push machine manually. Use free-wheeling lever on units with an automatic transmission. Result: Park brake must prevent machine from moving. If machine moves, parking brake needs to be adjusted. Children or bystanders may be injured by runover and rotating blades. Look behind the vehicle to be sure there are no bystanders.

Begin reverse travel by depressing reverse foot pedal for Automatic transmission or moving gear shift lever to R reverse position for Gear transmission. Result: Mower and engine should stop operation. If mower or engine continues to operate as tractor begins travel in reverse, do not continue to operate mower. Push and hold brake pedal A down. Move park brake lever B forward, then to the left to lock position. Release brake pedal. Pedal should stay down and park brake lever should stay locked.

Push and hold brake pedal down. Move park brake lever to the right, then to the rear. NOTE: Engine will not start unless mower is disengaged and transmission is in neutral. Put transmission in neutral. On Model , move throttle lever A to the half-speed position and pull out choke knob B.

Gradually push in the choke knob after the engine starts and warms up. On Model , pull out choke knob B. Push choke knob in as soon as the engine starts. Starter may be damaged if starter is operated for more than 20 seconds at a time:.

Turn key to start position C for no longer than five seconds. Release key to run position D when engine starts. Unnecessary engine idling may cause engine damage. Excessive idling can cause engine overheating, carbon build-up, and poor performance. Let engine run at half-speed position for a couple of minutes to warm-up before operating machine.

Engine is air cooled and needs a large volume of air to keep cool. Keep air intake screen A on top of engine clean. Move throttle lever A to slow position. Let engine run at low throttle a few seconds. Turn key to stop position B. Before traveling forward or rearward:. Stop machine movement before shifting between reverse and forward to prevent transmission damage. Move shift lever B to desired travel speed. NOTE: The engine and mower will stop as the gear shift lever is moved to R reverse if the mower engagement lever is not in the off position.

Put mower engagement lever C in the off position. Look behind the vehicle to be sure there are no bystanders nearby. Move shift lever B to R reverse position. To prevent transmission damage, stop tractor movement before changing direction of travel. When cruise control is not in use, hand lever should be returned manually, all the way rearward to OFF position. Otherwise, hand lever will restrict travel of reverse pedal linkage and reverse speed of tractor will be too slow.

NOTE: The engine and mower will stop as the shift lever is moved to R reverse or the reverse pedal is pushed if the mower engagement lever is not in the off position.

Put mower engagement lever in the off position. Be alert to the potential for personal injury when you see this safety-alert symbol. Adjust or service brakes as necessary. Be sure hardware is tight. Battery gas can explode. Use a volt-meter or hydrometer. This battery comes fully charged. If the mower is not used by the Service Expiration Date indicated on the battery, charge the battery. See Charging the Battery in the Service - Electrical section. DO NOT attempt to open, add fluid or service battery.

Any attempt to do so will void warranty and lead to possible injury. Tighten securely. Apply petroleum jelly or silicone spray to terminal to prevent corrosion. Install the red terminal cover. Connect silver braided grounding cable B to the negative — terminal C with remaining 6 mm hex head bolt and 6 mm flange nut and tighten securely. Never operate the mower without the discharge chute guard in place.

Explosive separation of a tire and rim parts can cause serious injury or death:. Do not inflate the tires above the recommended pressure. Never weld or heat a wheel and tire assembly. The heat can cause an increase in air pressure resulting in a tire explosion.

Welding can structurally weaken or deform the wheel. Check tire pressure with an accurate gauge. Add or remove air, if necessary:. Read and recognize safety information. Be alert to the potential for personal injury when you see this safety-alert symbol. NOTE: Tampering with emission controls and components by unauthorized personnel may result in severe fines or penalties. Adjust or service brakes as necessary. Be sure hardware is tight. Repair or replace damaged, badly worn, or missing parts. Be sure guards and shields are in good condition and fastened in place. Make any necessary adjustments before you operate. Keep people and pets out of the work area. Stop machine if anyone enters the area. Make repairs before you operate.

Keep machine and attachments properly maintained and in good working order. Safe operation requires your full attention. These operators should evaluate their ability to operate a mower safely enough to protect the operator and others from serious injury. Children are attracted to mowing activity, stay alert to the presence of children. DO NOT tow children in a cart or trailer. People especially children can move quickly into the mowing area before you know it.

Disengage mower blades and look behind the machine carefully, especially for children, before you back up. Be careful when you change direction on a slope. Reduced traction could cause sliding.

Keep riders off. Slow moving machines when driven on public roads are hard to see, especially at night. Avoid personal injury or death resulting from a collision with a vehicle. Extra flashing warning lights may need to be installed. Loosen two cap screws A two turns. Slide forward or rearward on mounting bracket to desired position.

Tighten cap screws or knobs. Pull pin B and rotate pin to the locked position. Slide seat forward or rearward to desired position. Release pin, make sure pin engages in hole in frame.

Always LOCK park brake before getting off tractor or leaving tractor unattended. Push and hold foot pedal A all the way down. Move park brake lever B forward, then to the left to lock position. Remove foot from pedal.

Pedal should not return to the up position. Move park brake lever B to the right, then to the rear. Pedal should return to the up position.

Start engine ONLY outdoors or in a well ventilated place. Exhaust fumes are dangerous. Do not operate starter more than 20 seconds at a time, or you may damage it. If engine does not start: Wait two minutes before you try again. See Troubleshooting section. If equipped with foot pedal controls, do not depress either pedal. As the engine begins to run smoothly, lower the throttle lever in small steps, allowing. As the engine begins to run smoothly, push the choke knob in until fully seated.

Turn ignition key F to start position to crank the engine. Crank engine until it starts, but no longer than 5 seconds. If engine starts, release key to run position. If engine does not start, release key to run position and wait 10 seconds before cranking the engine again. Let engine run for a couple of minutes to warm-up before operating tractor. Operating the engine at less that full throttle reduces the battery charging rate and reduces fan cooling efficiency of the engine.

During first minute of operation engine may be operated in partial choke to allow smoother running. As engine warms slowly reduce engine speed to the full throttle detent position.

Allow engine to run for a few minutes before using tractor to allow automatic transmission oil to warm. Sluggish transmission response in cold weather indicates that oil has not warmed to allow optimum performance.

Keep air intake screen A on top of engine clean. Push down on foot pedal A. If equipped with foot pedal controls, release either pedal and unit will automatically return to neutral. If cruise control is engaged, move lever to OFF position. Let engine run at low throttle a few seconds.

Turn key E to OFF position. Slowly release foot pedal to engage machine drive. Look behind the vehicle to be sure there are no bystanders nearby. Release foot pedal slowly. The speed of the tractor is determined by how far forward the shift lever is moved.

The speed of the tractor is determined by how far down the pedal is pressed.
